How to stay fit while traveling

Since I travel a lot, I always get asked from friends and followers how or what I do to keep fit or staying healthy while traveling. I find it a very exciting subject to talk about. I myself have learn by experience and with the years tought myself how to stay healthy while traveling, because to be honest – it’s quite hard. You are being taken out of your own rutine, and to be honest the last thing you want to do it to restrict yourself when you are on holiday.
I feel like I’ve got to a point where I’ve found the perfect balance, so I thought I would like to write this blogpost for you angels, to share the tips I live by while traveling. It’s a constant learning process, but these tips helps to keep me in balance:

1. Like I just said, It’s all about finding the right balance. You can allow yourself to relax and fully enjoy being on holiday but still be thoughtful about your health choices. I know this might not be what you want to hear but what you eat account for 80-90% of how you feel and look in your own skin. There’s nothing better than feeling the best version of yourself, so I’ve learned to listen to my own body. I eat helthy, but I am not scared to go for a pasta dish etc. then I just feel by body and listen to when I feel full. The worst you can do is to starve yourself! AND don’t freek out, relax and have fun and do your best, and then that’s all you can do.

I like to let loose and have evenings where I do not need to think about what I eat and how many calories I consume – I think that’s healthy for you. In general I’ve never been a big fan of counting calories.. I don’t believe that does anything good for you!
If I allow myself to pick a meal high in carbohydrates (pasta, bread, rice etc.) I always make sure the breakfast and lunch I had the same day and the day after is healthy and nurturing.
When you are on holiday allow yourself to pick the dishes you normally wouldn’t, but do it in a thoughtful way. Then don’t also go for a Coca Cola, then stick to water etc. Again: Balance is so important!

2. Eating healthy: I hate coming back from a trip and feeling heavy, tired and out of shape, That have happend to me many times in the past, because whenever I was travling I never wanted to think of how much I ate etc. Now also since I travel way more, and I pay more attention to my health and the way I look and feel I can’t let trips push me backwards. I don’t feel like I have the extra time and energy it takes to go though the emotional rush I need to deal with having to put more thoughs and effort into burning it all off again. Therfore I always try and eat as healthy as possible even though I travel.

I’ve learned that staying healthy and exercising doesn’t have anything to do with how much fun you have, it won’t make you say no to adventures – you’ll just do it in a way where you still treat your body the way it deserves. Then you treat your body well, you will feel better and in that way also be a happier version of yourself.

There’s nothing worse than coming back from a trip and you feel like you’ve gained 10 kg, because you’ve had pasta, ice creme and lots of alcohol every day. That feeling will only make you feel sad, and push you back!

Alcohol can be a real killer, but I love to enjoy a glass of wine every night when I’m on holiday. I am not a big drinker, so that’s never been the biggest burden for me. A tip would be to stick to less sugary drinks like gin and tonic, white wine, rose or vodka with cranberry juice etc. I always try to avoid beer!

3. Bring own snacks: For long flights a good tip would be to pack your own snacks. I try to avoid buying food in airports if I can. I always need and treat myself to a good coffee in the airport – that’s always my traveling “reward” to myself. I therefore always make sure to snack healthy, especially if I know I have a long journey ahead. It can be apples, bananas, nuts and dried fruit. AND, remember to drink lots of water! It keeps your body in balance, and by staying hydrated you are less likely to snack and crave unhealthy food.

Træning

Working out

4. Don’t forget to exercise: When I know I have a trip coming up I always try to work out a lot before because that allows me to relax a bit more when I’m traveling and knowing that I’ve worked hard before I went away. At times it can be hard to work out while you travel, so the day before a long flight I always do a good workout.

It of course depends on what sort of trip I’m going on, but I always pack my running gear with me. I like to wake up early and go for a small run. I also have to say, that you don’t have to work out every day – again it’s all about balance.

Staying fit while traveling is also thinking about how you get around. Instead of constantly taking public transport, see how far it is to walk or rent a bike. You’ll sometimes get surprised how fast it is to walk, plus in that way you’ll also get to see way more. Especially in London lots of the stations are located quite close to each other, and at times taking the buss takes the same amount of time as walking. AND while walking round you’ll spot new amazing places and charming streets you’ll never had if you were taking the undergound.

What often kills you is knowing you MUST workout and then you overdo it with one hardcore workout. I’ve done that many times, but learn that it’s not the way. Now I prioritise a 20-30 minutes workout, that makes me feel good about myself. I feel healthy, happy and it kick start my day the best way possible. It can be a 15 minutes run and 15 minutes stretching/yoga. That for me is the ultimate way to start my day! That’s realistic to do while traveling, and it will give you energy for the rest of the day.

If you are going on a summer holiday you could go for a 20 min power walk while listening to your favourite music or swim in the pool for 15 minutes. It also gives you a tan at the same time – win, win!

Do you have any more tips on how to keep a healthy lifestyle while traveling, then please feel free to share it with us in the comments, I will love to read how you angels stay in balance.
