A little glimpse into my daily life

    The timeless trench coat

“In a world full of trends, I want to remain a classic!”

Today is all about one of my ALL time favourite wardrobe staples: The trench coat! From once being the most iconic pieces of military uniform (that actually can the traced back to earlier than the First World War) to being one of the most iconic pieces in fashion.

I see a trench coat as much as a classic wardrobe staple like a pair of jeans and a white shirt. It’s a must have, and a fashion piece you will keep forever, and easily can dress up and down for many different occasions. I will both wear my trench for work, to meetings, with a dress for going out and with my lazy Sunday tracksuits.

This classic coat has got an inspiring and interesting history that I love. It was originally developed earlier than the First World War, and it was used as an item of clothing worn by officers. The traditional trench coat had a lot of functionalities and everything about the design served a purpose. It had multiple pockets – and often deep once so that officers could use them for maps and other equipments. It was often quite oversized so that officers could wear a warmer layer underneath since it was designed to protect them from wind and rain. Because the trench coat was light and the shape of it gave them freedom to move the officers loved the trench. It was also made of waterproof materials and the colour was originally khaki to help them stay camouflaged.

During World War I the trench coats were issued only to British Officers and Warrant Officers 1st Class. It wasn’t available for soldiers of lower rank, and this give it it’s “status” and helped to establish the trench as a coat of high standards and class.

After the war officers kept using their coats at home, and it welcomed it into the fashion world. Burberry and Aquascutum were the leading menswear designers at the time, and Burberry is still to this day known as the trench master! The trench then started to get a celebrity status between the world wars when it was worn by Hollywood stars, royalties and style icons.

I love everything that the trench coats stands for, and the powerful and quite mysterious attitude that it carries. I especially adore buying them secondhand and this one you see in this blogpost is my newest purchase. I bought it on Brick Lane last month, and I have been wearing it non stop since then.

I know that I will have this trench forever, and the fact that I can wear it with pretty much any outfit is what makes me adore it so much. I went for the timeless nude colour – but I am searching for one in black as well, since it’s a great transision coat moving into spring.

Some gorgeous trench coats I am crushing on:
